Harold Vernon "Joe" Mathews, 63, of Piketon, Ohio passed away Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Adena Regional Medical Center surrounded by loved ones. He was born July 19, 1959 in Waverly Ohio to the late Carl and Greta Mathews. He is survived by his beloved fiancée, Berniece "Neece" Kinzer; sons Josh (Courtney) Mathews of Beaver, Ohio, Hunter Mathews of Piketon, Ohio and Jason "Jay" Stulley of Ironton, Ohio; daughters, Jennifer Keesee and Amber Mathews of Waverly, Ohio, Isabella Knisley and Amanda Moore of Piketon, Ohio; grandchildren Bridget, Kyrail, Adriana, Zoe, Zandra, Colin, Kade, John, and Karlee "Papaw's girl"; great grandsons Brixton and Ameir; siblings Loretta (Bruce) Walls of Peebles, Ohio, Tresa(Brett) Ward and Dwayne (Michelle) Mathews of Waverly Ohio; many nieces, nephews, and close friends he considered family.

Joe graduated from Western High School in 1977 and worked as a mechanic for over 40 years. It was more than a job to him, truly what he loved doing. He spent the majority of his days in a garage working, talking cars, and spending time with friends. No matter what kind of day you were having or problem you were dealing with, you were guaranteed a few laughs, even if the jokes were sometimes at your expense. He had a way about him to make everyone feel welcome as soon as you walked in the door. He enjoyed drag racing for many years and recently had purchased a car he had been rebuilding with his sons to one day race again. He led a life of adventure with plenty of stories to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2023 at Botkin Hornback Funeral Home in Waverly with Jeremy Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Latham Cemetery in Waverly. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
